Like many communities across America, Pike County, Pennsylvania
is facing the challenge of balancing development with conservation, providing economic opportunity while maintaining a way of life and rural landscape that have attracted people to Pike County for over a century.
Nature’s Keepers, A Community of Conservationists features profiles of some of the dedicated men and women of Pike County, Pennsylvania, who are passionate about this community, the environment and protecting their quality of life. It is a unique look at how one community, located just 90 miles for New York City, confronts the challenge of balancing growth, economic development and conservation.
At the heart of their effort is a spirit of cooperation, not confrontation. It’s a spirit that did not always exist and emerged only after bitter battles divided neighbors and threatened the well-being of the community.
From those hard fought struggles emerged creative and sometimes unlikely partnerships that are laying the groundwork for the future of Pike County, Pennsylvania.
Nature’s Keepers is the story of the people Pike County and how they sacrifice their time, talents and often their money to honor the area’s legacy of conservation and protect their way of life.
The reasons for their efforts and the ways they contribute to the well-being of Pike County are as diverse as are the residents who undertake them. Some are passionate about a particular body of water and some are dedicated to teaching the next generation how to be good stewards of the land, while others work to foster understanding between opposing groups. But no matter how they choose to get involved, each of these individuals share the same dedication to preserving the character of the community they love.
