Pike County, Pennsylvania is uniquely located at the crossroads of the past, present and future of America’s conservation movement. The ‘spiritual home’ of the U.S. Forest Service, Pike County has been at the forefront of the conservation movement in this country since it’s inception and continues to be home to a living laboratory of scientific forestry as well as a hotbed of partnerships that seek to balance the competing demands of conservation, development and recreation.
Nature’s Keepers: A Community Of Conservationists introduces viewers to a wide spectrum of residents who love their community and work in a variety ways to conserve and protect the area’s most important resources.
There are educators who share their knowledge and passion with visitors and residents alike. Others are businessmen and developers who understand the economic value of balancing nature with growth. Still others are community activists who help bridge the divides between groups that in many places spend more time fighting with each other than they do building their communities.
By striving to preserve a delicate balance between the need to maintain itself economically while preserving the natural heritage and quality of life today’s residents of Pike County honor its past while preparing for the future. The partnerships created here have the potential to serve as a national and international model for communities struggling to serve as good stewards of the environment while ensuring a bright future to their posterity.
Nature’s Keepers: A Community Of Conservationists is more than the story of one community’s effort. It is a tale of hope and opportunity for the growing number of places around the country trying to cope with these important issues. While no two communities will have the same problems and solutions, the story of Pike County, Pennsylvania can serve as a guide and provide proof that where people of goodwill come together it is possible to build for the future while protecting those things that make a place so special now.
