FIDELMA O’KANE

Friends of the Earth Northern Ireland

Fidelma was born and reared in the Sperrin Mountains and has lived in the area all her life, apart from time at university in Belfast and Glasgow.

Since she retired, Fidelma has had more time to enjoy the countryside again. Unfortunately peace and tranquillity has now become threatened by Dalradian, a Canadian goldmining company. The company has applied for planning permission to build a goldmine, with associated waste dump, contaminated water storage ponds, a cyanide processing plant, and a mercury smelting furnace in the Sperrins Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Fidelma feels strongly that she cannot allow the beauty of the Sperrins to be spoilt by such a toxic industry as goldmining. So she joined the Save Our Sperrins campaign and feels driven to speak out and inform people of the necessity to protect the precious air, clean water, land, health, and heritage.

“I am very much a country person as I love the peace and solitude it affords, as well as enjoying the beautiful scenery of the mountains, valleys, rivers, and burns. I particularly love autumn with the abundant, richly coloured leaves.”
